| This is a chameleon of an RIS; it's part traditional, part quadrupel. It has an inviting appearance of dark mahogany with nonexistent head, but there were plenty flecks of yeast sediment circling the glass (the label states that it's an '03 vintage, though I'm not sure if that's accurate). Aroma is a balanced mashup of roasted malt and candi sugar, a bit of fresh ground coffee, and a small, equal amount of oakiness and dark fruit. Medium-bodied with a slick mouthfeel, the taste trots out with sugary sweetness on the tongue and is backed up with a chocolate note that eases into the palate. There is a minimal undertone of java that mirrors the smell, and it finishes dry and roasty. The malts reverberate in the aftertaste coupled with a hint of bitterness. For its style, the alcohol is well-hidden (though it definitely makes itself known after all is said and done). Definitely a unique entry into the style. | |
